An Interview with Andrew
Me, Andrew, and Livy all sat down together for a little interview. Their responses were so cute, I decided to post them.
How old are you? 5 years old

Diapers
A few months ago I went crazy and decided to stop using disposable diapers... Haha. I say "crazy" because that is what most people call me when I tell them this news. I remember having a few friends that did it and thinking, "Good for you, but I could never do that." Despite the looks people give me when they find out, I am 95% sure of my decision and happy with the change. Now before everyone stamps "lunatic" or "tree-hugger" to my forehead, let me explain...
1: They really are not much worse than disposables. I mean changing any type of diaper is no picnic. But, the days of wrapping cloth around your baby with pins and swishing them around in the toilet to get them clean are gone. They are so much easier to use than they used to be.
2: They save SOOO much money. I have 13 diapers that I paid less than 200 dollars for. I have a few other accessories, but haven't spent over 300. That's about the same cost as 5-6 months of disposables. Mine are all adjustable one-size diapers so they last from newborn to potty training.
3: They're much better for the environment. :)
4: They're cute... yes, I just called a diaper cute. And they don't leak near as often.
I still use disposables when we leave town and at night sometimes or when I run out of cloth. I went through a bit of trial and error in the beginning but watched a ton of youtube videos and read a ton of blogs on the subject. Who knew there was such a world of cloth diapers? There have definitely been a couple times where I wanted to bag the whole idea and go back to disposables. But for the most part, I've been happy with the switch and don't want to go back.
Despite what this picture may tell you, I think Millie likes them too. :) I should have bought more diapers with snaps!

What's new?
I'm generally not a huge fan of the months January, February, and March... It's so cold, even in this mild winter. As such, we don't go out much during those months or do anything very exciting. But I'm tired of seeing the same old posts on my blog every time I open it, so here's a little update on what's new with us...
Ben turned a quarter of a century old! I made him an Almond Joy cake
which wasn't as wonderful as I hoped but he didn't seem to care.
We had a fun Valentine's Day. Ben and I made a big heart shape out of chocolate kisses in the kid's room while they slept. We put the gifts they got from my mom in the middle of the heart and they were thrilled to wake up and see it. I also made pink pancakes for breakfast. Since Ben has to work nights, my neighbor offered to watch my kids so we could eat dinner alone during his break. He was really surprised and that made it all the more fun.
Last Saturday we fed the ducks at first dam. The kids loved that and have been begging to go back.
The new theme in Primary this year is Choose The Right and Andrew has been obsessed with choices and consequences lately. He found this recipe for CTR pretzels in The Friend and begged me for days to make them.
I started a book club with some neighbors and we had our first meeting yesterday. It was tons of fun. I have been wanting to start one FOREVER!
I've been doing well on my resolution to work out every day. Jillian Michaels is kicking my butt. I admit that some days I would rather do anything than get up and exercise, but I'm a much happier and energetic mom when I work out. Andrew is my personal trainer and lets me know when I'm slacking.
Today is my sweet mother-in-law's birthday. I wish we were in Duchesne helping her celebrate.
That's about all the news I can think of. Sorry we're so boring! Maybe next month we'll do something exciting...

Curls
It may be hard to tell in this picture, but my baby has curls! Yay! (Not ringlets, but wavy curls)
Andrew had the prettiest curls as a baby and it broke my heart to cut them.
When Olivia started to get hair, it became apparent that she was not going to get curly genes. She has the straightest hair I've ever seen! Every time I curl it, it goes straight again within a couple hours.
That's okay, I still love my straight haired girl. I'm excited to have a curly headed baby though!

A Lantern In Her Hand
Get ready for my random soap box of the week... :) I'll probably be embarrassed I even posted this but I found my new favorite book and it's got me thinking... A LOT about being a mom. It's called A Lantern In Her Hand by Bess Streeter Aldrich. I apologize if I sound like a broken record to everyone who has heard me rave about it for the past several weeks but I just can't get it out of my head. It's not some crazy, exciting, or totally unique story either. It's just about a pioneer mom and the sacrifices she makes for her family. One of my favorite quotes in the book is when the main character Abbie, is responding to her daughter's comments about her being too "narrow" because she never traveled...
"You know, Gracie, it's queer, but I don't feel narrow. I feel broad. How
can I explain it to you, so you would understand? I've seen
everything... and I've hardly been away from this yard. I've seen
cathedrals in the snow on the Lombardy poplars. I've seen the sun set
behind the Alps over there when the clouds have been piled up on the
edge of the prairie. I've seen the ocean billows in the rise and the
fall of the prairie grass. I've seen history in the making... three ugly
wars flare up and die down. I've sent a lover and two brothers to one, a
son and son-in-law to another, and two grandsons to the other. I've
seen the feeble beginnings of a raw state and the civilization that
developed there, and I've been part of the beginning and part of the
growth. I've married...and borne children and looked into the face of
death. Is childbirth narrow, Grace? Or marriage? Or death? When you've
experienced all those things, Grace, the spirit has traveled although
the body has been confined. I think travel is a rare privilege and I'm
glad you can have it. But not every one who stays at home is narrow and
not every one who travels is broad. I think if you can understand
humanity...can sympathize with every creature...can put yourself into
the personality of every one...you're not narrow...you're broad."
If that quote doesn't give you goose-bumps, I don't know what will! The thing about the book is that this mother never did anything too spectacular for herself but she did everything for her family. How often do you hear moms lamenting that they need a hobby, they need a job, they need something in order to have an identity outside of their kids? I am not saying anything is wrong with those things, I think a lot of those things are actually good and help moms keep their sanity. I'm also not suggesting that good moms only sit at home with kids and never travel, learn, work, or take a break for things they enjoy or have to do. But I had to drop all my classes last week and I couldn't help but feel like some kind of failure for not doing more. I seriously bawled my eyes out over dropping them. (Yeah I'm emotional.) Why is it that women have to have it all? Maybe I already have it all... so why do I feel pressure to do more? I was talking with my cousin the other day and she said, "Remember when you didn't like kids? And said you didn't want kids?" I was horrified that I actually said those things... and then I thought about it and the truth is, I don't think I ever really did feel those things. I just wanted to be rebellious and do something more than "JUST" stay home. I wanted to get my degree and see the world and heck, I still want to do those things... SOMEDAY. But I also always wanted to rock my own babies to sleep or bake cookies for them to eat after school and guess what... my kids are almost school age! So I'll just warn everyone now, I'll probably be the next Duggar woman (no I'm not pregnant) because I'm obsessed with my kids, parenting books, childbirth, play dates, and snack times. I'm really happy with my life as a stay at home mom, as "narrow" as it may seem at times.
"And the minister at home had said you could do anything with your life. But that was not so. Life did things to you."
If you haven't read that book, I highly recommend it!!
