Happy Birthday Ben!

Twenty two years ago today, my lovely mother-in-law had her third baby, my wonderful husband, Ben! I am so blessed to have him in my life. I couldn't ask for a better husband. Here are some things I love about Ben. (disclaimer: this is mostly for Ben, if you get nauseous at cheesiness, I would close now. haha)

1: He encourages me, and sometimes forcefully(haha), to try new things. For instance, I had never had sweet potatoes but I really didn't want to try them, they just looked sick. Well he made some and I felt bad that no one was going to try them but him... so I worked up the courage and tried it. They were amazing! Which brings me to my next favorite thing about Ben...

2: He is an awesome cook. From the time we were dating I always knew this. One time he made me waffles with homemade syrup (yum!) and another time I came to his house to find him scooping out baked pumpkins to make a pumpkin pie from scratch. From that moment on I knew we were destined to be together. Hahaha.

3: He is patient with me. I will be the first to admit that I can be a difficult wife. I think it is partly to do with the fact that I am a self-diagnosed OCD... haha. One day when I was hugely pregnant with Andrew, I started crying in the car that I really wanted a good peach... (dang those cravings!) All Ben said was, "Okay, we will drive all over town then to find you a good peach."

4: He is so thoughtful. He watches the kids every morning so I can sleep in and he always empties the dishwasher before he goes because he knows I hate doing it. He is even good to me when I don't deserve it. When we were in high school, my car got broken into and they stole all my cds. Even though Ben was annoyed at me for the circumstances surrounding it... (long story, won't go there) He bought me all the Smashing Pumpkins cds again because they were my favorite band at the time. There were like 10 discs!

5: He makes me feel good about myself. Ben just really doesn't care, for the most part, what people think about him. Granted he doesn't want to come off like a bad person, but if someone doesn't like him, he doesn't care. One particular bad hair day, I was bawling to Ben about how I was so ugly and what people were going to think of me. I think his first thought was probably that I was retarded but he told me that it didn't matter what people thought. He said that if someone was going to judge me by the way I look and decide not to be my friend than it would be good news for me because I wouldn't want friends like that anyway. I didn't think anything could make me feel better, but that comment did. He is always telling me how beautiful I look even when I feel like an ugly. Hahaha.

6: He is always inspiring me to do better. When I first started dating Ben it seemed that we would never go through the temple, be active in church, etc. etc. But Ben has changed so much so that we could be together forever. When Andrew was blessed by Ben's dad, he promised everyone that he would never ask someone else to bless one of his children, he kept true to that and blessed Olivia. He is one of the most humble and spiritual people I know.

7: He is a great father. I never realized how much I missed out on not having a dad around until I saw Ben bounce Andrew and Olivia around the hospital room when they were born. He is always going on about how Olivia is the most beautiful baby in the world and how Andrew is his best bud. He never uses the excuse that he has no time (even though he doesn't!) when he gets home. He gets right down and plays and talks with them both.

Anyway--- I could go on and on and on about the things I love about Ben. It's a good thing I married him I guess. I will just have to tell him the rest of the things over dinner tonight! Whoo Whoo! A night out without children! Another miracle. Happy Birthday Benny!

I am so glad you asked about homeschooling. I hope I can explain it okay, so you can understand why we love it.

You can read some of it here:

http://goodfreedom.blogspot.com/2008/07/new-beginning.html

I started out homeschooling because I felt my oldest would thrive outside of a "sit-down-all-day" public school envirnment. I had read books about it and it peaked my interest. I put him in prek and Kindergarten and half way thru K, I noticed a change in his behavior and personality...for the worse. I took him out half way thru K and he has done SO well being homeschooled. He is much happier, smarter, and well adjusted than he would be if i had left him where he was...

My daughter started homeschooling and was already done with K before she was even old enough to go to Public School so we kept her home too. She is ahead in her studies and they love learning together. Although, she is the kind of kid who would LOVE public school...she would just get bored because of how bright she is.

I am now teaching my 3rd preK and love teaching all of them. We are a bit spoiled because we can pretty much do whatever we want, whenever we want. We can take off and leave town for a few days anytime we feel like it.

Socialization is always everyone's #1 concern. For me, I was MORE worried about "the wrong kind of socialization" that I see my friends kids going thru at school...bullying, learning cussing, pornography, talk of sex, value of things material..etc. My kids get plenty of socilization...church activities, birthday parties, family get togethers, music lessons, FFA, park days, playdates, etc. Sometimes I worry they are getting TOO much play time with friends.

You can read on socialization here: ( I just googled it, since I am in a hurry, but there are lots of similar articles on my harddrive somewhere)

Whatever you decide to do, homeschooling is something to learn about anyway before you decide. I like to think we are a normal family "Not freaks" like some homeschooling families give reputations as... We learn a lot, my kids are doing really well and I love having them home with me all the time, so I know what they are doing, where they are, and what they are learning.

They learn alot faster with the 1 on 1 teaching and you can learn along with them. That is my favorite part!

Well besides that being the sweetest thing I have probably ever read (and shed a few tears over) I have one to add... one of my most favorite things about Ben is that he is the best brother in law in the world!! And that is not just saying... he plays games with me... he isn't judgemental... he makes me laugh... he is an amazing husband to my equally amazing sister and neice and nephew... he is just an amazing person! So Happy Birthday Ben!!

I agree - the family and mother does determine some of how social/shy they are. I am a recluse in town in general, but am very social when I am in a group, party, or event... and when we leave town...

But then again, you have to ask yourself, how many public school kids come out unsocialized or "weird"? Lots! So there will be some that turn out that way homeschooling too. I think it can depend on the child's personality too.

As for high school, I hope we can travel by then. I dream of taking my teenage kids to Mexico, Europe, Canada..etc... I would like them to be able to have jobs, explore talents, sky is the limit kind of stuff. Really, I haven't planned that far ahead, but if the kid really wants to go to HS, they can. You know they can duel-enroll which means they can take *some classes at the school, like math or art, and then do the rest at home. That is a good option. They even have online classes, with interactive video and classes with teachers and all. Who knows how cool it will all be when my kids are that age. I just try and think one year at a time for that reason.

Ask away! I love the questions! It helps me remember why I chose this lifestyle in the first place!
